Drupal: anonymous page views with statistics

For simple popularity statistics, Drupal offers a very stripped-down approach: counting content instead of tracking people.

Prerequisites

Drupal administration access; additional access to server and proxy logs for the overall check.

What is counted

The current Statistics project explicitly describes its goal as anonymous analytics. It counts complete node page views and maintains total and daily counters; historical visitor profiles are not part of the concept.

Activation

The counting is activated under Configuration → System → Statistics . If you need more than content popularity, you should evaluate additional analytics modules separately rather than assuming they have the same privacy features.

Server logs remain separate

Even an anonymous Drupal counter does not automatically prevent IP addresses in Apache/nginx, proxy, PHP or hoster logs.

Test

Generate test calls and check the resulting counters.

Dismantling

If necessary, deactivate the counting again and check it again.

Basics of visitor recognition

For classification purposes, Cookieless is not automatically tracking-free and Use unique visitors without recognition . What is important is not just the presence of cookies, but also whether requests are merged via sessions, hashes, local storage or other features.

Important: IP processing is not IP storage

An IP address has to be processed to establish and deliver a network connection. Hosting providers, firewalls or DDoS protection may also process or retain it for a limited time for security purposes. No Logging distinguishes this security layer from unnecessary persistent visitor logging by the website, application and ordinary access logs.
