WooCommerce: Only use IP geolocation when needed

Prerequisites

WooCommerce admin access and clarity on whether taxes or shipping actually require automated location tracking.

Do not set the default customer location to Geolocate if location-based tax or shipping logic is not needed. With Geolocate with page caching support, WooCommerce appends a user-specific hash of the IP to URLs. To save data, choose the simplest sufficient location option.

Check

After the change, check browser memory, network connections and web server, proxy and application logs separately. A product setting does not automatically prove that no visitor IP is stored at all levels.

Classify IP processing

If geolocation is activated, additionally check IP processing and IP storage and clarify whether the function actually needs the specific shop purpose.

Dismantling

If geolocation is required for shipping, taxes or other shop functions, only reactivate the required location function and check the IP processing again.

Important: IP processing is not IP storage

An IP address has to be processed to establish and deliver a network connection. Hosting providers, firewalls or DDoS protection may also process or retain it for a limited time for security purposes. No Logging distinguishes this security layer from unnecessary persistent visitor logging by the website, application and ordinary access logs.
